This past Saturday (28/04/2018) was the International Health & Safety Day around the world. We have decided that there is no better opportunity than now to speak about just that, so we got hold of one of our real brainy types, Lois Blade, and had a chat to her about all things Health & Safety.
Health and Safety…it’s a sore topic for some and one that is generally overlooked as its found to be petty with loads of rules and regulations. The matter of the fact is, it’s an important and crucial part to every business. It is there to protect people from all kinds of hazards, both the physical and respirable, for the employer and employee.
“Every 15 seconds, in the world, a worker dies from a work-related accident or disease, and 153 people experience a work -related injury” equating to over 2.78million people dying each year – International Organisation for Standardisation.
The recent release of ISO 45001 on Occupational Health and Safety brings a new and improved approach to health and safety in the workplace. Its appearance as a new ISO standard will enable an organisations management system to become more effective. Costs experienced by a company due to Health and Safety can be astronomical, not just due to employee health but also absenteeism cost. By implementing a health and safety system it would help boost morale in employees as their role within the business feels valued. It also helps with reducing risk of reputation for organisations due to fines and prison sentences etc. The below figure shows workplace costs due to lack of health and safety in 2015-2016:
